Sri lanka blue magpie –urocissa ornate.




This beautiful endemic bird is most appropriately called locally as “kahibella” meaning beautiful damsel of the forest according to some etymologists it is a social species living in small groups of 4-6 individuals out side the breeding season. During the breeding season the pairs move out but remain not far away from the rest of its social members . they feed mainly on insects ,small lizards etc. its distribution is confined to the forest away from human habitations.

Sinharaja is a real paradise of Sri Lanka. That is thing that you wondered is over 50% of endemic species of fauna are living in Sinharaja Tropical rain forest. There are about 282 birds are recorded in Sinharaja out of 384 in Sri Lanka. It is 73%. Most of species who are endemic to Sri Lanka can be seen on Sinharaja. Reptiles, birds butterflies, fishes, amphibians and mammals are major fauna types.


The forest is steeped in deep legend and mystery the word sinharaja means , lion(sinha) king(raja) and the popular beliefs is that the legendary origin of the sinharaja people in Sri Lanka is from the descendant of the union the lion king who once lived in the forest and a princess.
